Pet Trusts

What is a Pet Trust?

Although Michigan law treats pets as property, MCL 700.2722 provides that a trust may be created for the care of a designated domestic or pet animal.  A trust protects the pet in the event of its owner’s death or disability by providing a named trustee and named caregiver (they may be the same person) with both funds and instructions to continue the care of a valued animal companion.
